An echocardiogram is a type of ultrasound that uses sound waves to take images of your heart. The sound waves are high-pitched and are bounced off of different parts of the heart. These echoes can produce moving pictures on a video screen.

You do not need to take any special preparation for a transthoracic echocardiogram.

How Is It Done?

An echocardiogram may be done in a hospital, clinic, or doctor’s office.
You are required to remove any jewelry and clothing above the waist. Underwear may be kept on if it does not interfere with the procedure.

The echocardiogram is safe and has not been shown to have any harmful side effects.
